The Kane Chronicles – Kane and Mei Lin: The Turning begins in New York City in 1920, where Cameron Kane works long days on the docks. Strong, guarded, and accustomed to surviving through physical force, Kane becomes an unlikely protector when he hears a woman screaming in an alley.
The woman is Mei Lin, a poor Chinese immigrant who had gone out to find medicine for her grandmother. Kane saves her from a group of attackers, beginning a relationship that will alter both of their lives.
Despite differences in language, culture, and family expectations, Kane and Mei Lin form an immediate connection. Kane is gradually welcomed into Mei Lin’s family, where he encounters Chinese customs, spiritual traditions, and a sense of belonging he has never experienced before. To her family, he becomes the “Demon-Warrior,” a fierce protector whose intimidating strength conceals his capacity for loyalty and tenderness.
Their love soon faces brutal opposition. Violence, racial hostility, criminal forces, personal grief, and difficult choices push the couple beyond the lives they once knew. Forced to escape New York, they enter a larger and more mysterious world where ancient teachings, supernatural forces, and hidden truths begin to reshape their understanding of reality.
